OUR AIM

Under Our Skin Film Festival believes that film has the power to motivate discussion and inspire change in individuals and communities for the good of Kenyan society.

By hosting community screenings during our first film festival edition in 2021, we hope to create a new opportunity for participants to envision what a young, vibrant and more inclusive future for Kenya can look like.

In Kenya, film has long been a way of bringing people together, for both entertainment and education.  Under Our Skin sees potential in galvanising the power of film as a tool to inspire individuals and communal efforts towards positive change around Human Rights outcomes.

Under Our Skin festival is an opportunity to engage audiences in an open organised environment, creating spaces where communities can reflect on and discuss existing social issues. We believe film has the power to motivate discussion and inspire change in individuals, and communities for the good of Kenyan society. By bringing diverse groups together in Kenya, we hope to use film to promote discussion, inspire creativity and influence future collaborations.

We want to offer a space for Kenyans of all backgrounds to come together and address pressing issues that individuals, groups, and communities grapple with on a daily basis.

About the Festival

Under Our Skin Film Festival, 2021 will be hosting daily screenings at its host venues, as well as screenings in community spaces, youth centers, and at several open-air locations. Both international and local, privileged and less advantaged citizens will have equal access to our cover-free screenings during a 2 week-long festival in Nairobi and 3-day film festival weekend in Kilifi. With all these events combined, we aim to reach over 6000 participants.

Our Themes

The first edition of Under Our Skin Film Festival will focus on 3 main human rights themes: injustice by design; an expression as a right; and a social contract redefined.

Expression as a right:

Focuses on Human Rights issues related to self-expression of sexuality, class or gender, of note in Kenya: LGBTQ+ rights, Ghetto Kumoka (Ghetto Pride), economies of care and adolescents and teenagers.

Injustice by design:

Explores notions of corruption at the state level and police brutality. In slum areas in particular there is great tension between the community members and those in power.

Social Contract redefined:

Understands how injustices perpetuate within the infrastructural framework of the country. Examples range from processes of decolonization and climate refugees and other impacts of climate change.
